At Body Boat Blade, our coaching philosophy is based on a student-focused and learner-led approach. We are not here to teach the “one way” to do things, and we believe that our students have as much to teach us as we have to teach them. By committing ourselves to continual personal and professional development, we aim to bring the most up to date and modern techniques to our courses. We are here to provide learning in a safe and enjoyable environment that allows anyone to participate. Body Boat Blade is an inclusive kayak school that supports participation from everyone regardless of age, identity or ability. Everyone is welcome to kayak with Body Boat Blade.

OUR MISSION

Our certified instructors uphold the highest standards of coaching, leadership, and judgment in every program we offer. At Body Boat Blade International, we believe kayaking is all about fun—building your skills enhances the excitement, adventure, and opportunities on the water.

We offer year-round courses ranging from three-hour sessions to five-day kayak camps, featuring a progressive curriculum.

***All of our coaches are British Canoeing certified and teach within the scope of their qualifications.

  • Whether you’re heading into Deception Pass or the outer coast, our courses develop you into a strong and resilient kayaker ready for anything the ocean throws at you.

  • Guides and trip leaders from all over the world have influenced our leadership styles. We are honored to pass our influence to the next generation of leaders and guides

  • We are one of the few providers of British Canoeing and ACA Awards on the West Coast. Contact us if you’d like to add one of these organizations to your paddling resume!

  • We often use pictures and video during our courses to give each student a view of their performance and to improve feedback. We also get some pretty cool action shots!

  • Our Coaches have travelled and completed expeditions around the globe. We can help you plan your next trip and take your navigation skills to the next level.

CHAPTER

Alex and his wife Sarah, are thrilled to carry on the legacy of Body Boat Blade. They continue to grow the kayak school and have now expanded to a full retail and rental paddle shop. They are committed to preserving the traditions that have made it special while continuing to offer fun and exciting courses to serve the paddling community.

In 2018, Alex Lalonde moved to Washington, bringing a university degree in Expeditionary Studies, years of mentorship under top-level coaches, and international instructing experience. Passionate about kayaking and teaching, he quickly became one of the West Coast’s top kayak coaches, ready to carry forward the Body Boat Blade legacy. Committed to upholding the highest coaching standards, Alex believes each generation builds upon the knowledge of those before.

Now based in Anacortes, Washington, Body Boat Blade’s new home on Fidalgo Island is the perfect training ground for paddlers. Easily accessible from Seattle, it offers diverse conditions—from calm bays to the dynamic waters of Deception Pass.

Nearby islands and rugged coastlines in Washington and British Columbia provide ideal settings for tidal navigation, surf, and expedition courses. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced paddler, Body Boat Blade continues to uphold its legacy of excellence in coaching and adventure on the water.

For over 18 years, Body Boat Blade International set the standard for sea kayak coaching in the Pacific Northwest, thanks to the dedication of its founders, Shawna Franklin and Leon Sommé. In 2019, they passed the torch to Alex Lalonde, ensuring the legacy of excellence and innovation lives on.

With deep respect for those who came before, Alex brings a new era of coaching, shaped by the latest advancements in paddling instruction. As Body Boat Blade moves forward, it remains true to its roots—inspiring, educating, and pushing the boundaries of sea kayak coaching.
